The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Gordon G. Green (ASN: RA-17264563), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team, 11th Airborne Division, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of Inje, Korea. On 27 May 1951, Company C launched an assault against a firmly entrenched and well-concealed enemy force holding Hill 592. The enemy had cleared fire lanes and the intense and accurate machine-gun fire sweeping across the area effectively stalled the attack. Private Green, pinned down with the rest of his unit, observed that a comrade, in attempting to cross the fire-swept area, had been hit by enemy automatic weapons fire. Without hesitation, and with complete disregard for his personal safety, Private Green crawled across the open area, completely exposed to the heavy enemy fire, in an attempt to aid the fallen man. Seriously wounded in moving across the exposed terrain, Private Green, nevertheless, managed to administer first aid and pull the man to safety, thereby saving his life. The extraordinary courage exhibited by Private Green reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
