The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Edward L. Green (ASN: RA-15280695), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 15 September 1950 in the vicinity of Yongsan, Korea. On the night of 14 September 1950 his company was subjected to a fierce enemy attack by a numerically superior enemy which forced one platoon to withdraw after sustaining severe casualties. On the morning of 15 September 1950 Corporal Green’s platoon was ordered to counterattack. Under intense and deadly hostile fire, the platoon launched its assault. Corporal Green, an automatic rifleman, constantly exposed himself to the withering enemy fire as he moved forward. The platoon suffered heavy casualties and the troops began to waver under the relentless hostile fire which threatened to dissipate the force of the attack. Corporal Green, with a magnificent display of courage, continued his undaunted advance firing his automatic rifle with great effect against the well-entrenched enemy. His aggressiveness and his determination to close with and destroy the enemy, caused a rally among his disheartened comrades who followed his heroic example and, resuming the assault, drove the enemy from his positions. During the engagement he killed at least 20 enemy and was largely instrumental in the success of the depleted platoon in regaining the lost ground. The gallantry displayed on this occasion by Corporal Green reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
