The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Edward J. Green (ASN: RA-13357425), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 31 March 1951, while attacking Hill 526, near Tongduchon-ni, Korea, forward elements of Corporal Green’s platoon had maneuvered to the base of the hill, when they became subjected to heavy enemy machine gun fire. Forward advance was impossible and the rear of the platoon was being fired upon so continuously and directly that any movement was disastrous. Corporal Green saw that two men in the forward positions had been wounded and were helpless in protecting themselves from the blistering hail of enemy fire. Completely ignoring the grave danger, Corporal Green voluntarily left his covered position and crawled laboriously over the rugged area to the side of his wounded comrades. Before he could render any assistance, he was forced to return the enemy fire, killing three of the foe. After giving what first aid he could, Corporal Green made two trips across the hazardous terrain to carry the wounded soldiers behind friendly lines to safety. Corporal Green’s gallantry and extreme concern for the welfare of his fellow soldiers reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
