The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 2, 1926, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Jack (John) F. Grebner (ASN: 35684950), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with the gallantry in action while serving with the 182d Infantry Regiment, 27th Infantry Division (Americal), in action against the enemy in the Solomon Islands, on 11 March 1944. With his company being subjected to heavy enemy fire, Private Grebner’s platoon leader worked his way into a small depression from where he attempted to silence hostile knee mortar fire with a bazooka. Observing the officer’s position was exposed, Private First Class Grebner, on his own initiative, moved 10 yards to high ground in the rear. He controlled all avenues of approach and offered the officer excellent protection against fire, but he himself was exposed to hostile enemy fire. Despite this, he grimly held on until killed instantly by a direct hit. Private First Class Grebner readily and courageously sacrificed his life to protect his commanding officer. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Grebner, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
