The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Marion D. Gray (ASN: ER-13093500), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in Korea. On 25 April 1951, Company G was occupying defensive positions near Kungp’yong-ni, Korea, when it was attacked by a numerically superior enemy force. Corporal Gray, a machine gunner, delivered belt after belt of ammunition into the ranks of the onrushing foe. Relentless waves of hostile troops poured forward while laying down an intense volume of fire forcing the defensive unit to withdraw to more tenable positions. Realizing the necessity of a rear guard action, Corporal Gray asked for and received permission to remain in his position and provide protective cover for the safe withdrawal of the company. Laying down a devastating base of fire, he slowed the fanatical foe long enough for his comrades to reach safety. He then picked up his weapon and started to join them but finding himself encircled by hordes of the enemy troops, he fearlessly re-set his machine gun in an exposed position and commenced delivering a lethal hail of bullets into the ranks of the foe, inflicting heavy casualties. His courageous and determined actions were directly responsible for the safe withdrawal of his fellow soldiers with a minimum of casualties. Corporal Gray’s gallantry reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
