The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Golden Leslie Gray (ASN: RA-15281943), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 16 September 1950 in the vicinity of Changnyong, Korea. On that date his platoon was attacking enemy positions along the Naktong River. During the assault the platoon was subjected to intense hostile self-propelled gun fire which halted the advance and inflicted severe casualties upon the unit. Corporal Gray, voluntarily and with complete disregard for his personal safety, moved forward and attempted to neutralize the enemy position with automatic rifle fire. When this fire was ineffective he took a 57-mm. recoilless rifle and advanced through the fire-swept terrain toward the target. From an exposed position he succeeded in destroying the weapon and its crew before he was killed by enemy fire. His intrepidity in sacrificing his life in this engagement enabled his platoon to advance and seize its objective with a minimum of casualties. The gallantry and inspirational devotion to duty displayed by Corporal Gray reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
