The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Armor) Wilbur Jordan Graves (ASN: 0-1930808), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 72d Tank Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 26 June 1953 in the vicinity of Yak San-dong, North Korea. On that date, Lieutenant Graves, a Tank Platoon Leader, was dispatched to aid a disabled tank, which was under direct enemy observation and fire. Upon reaching the scene of action, he dismounted his tank and valiantly attempted to secure a cable to the immobile tank. Realizing he could not move the disabled tank to a place of safety, he ordered the crew members into the protective covering of his vehicle. The enemy shelling was intensified, but with complete disregard for personal safety, Lieutenant Graves remained exposed to enemy fire until all the crew members of the immobile tank were inside the command tank. While mounting his vehicle he was mortally wounded by an incoming enemy mortar round. By his display of courage and selfless devotion to duty he prevented further casualties among his comrades and made it possible for their evacuation. The gallantry in action displayed by Lieutenant Graves reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
