The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Field Artillery), [then Captain] Perry H. Graves (ASN: 0-417497), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 555th Field Artillery Battalion, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On the morning of 11 August 1950, near Pangdong-ni, Korea, a large hostile force which had infiltrated through friendly lines the previous night launched an attack on the battery position. Remaining in an exposed position, Captain Graves calmly directed point-blank artillery fire on the attacking horde. His actions so inspired the men of his battery that they repulsed the attack. Captain Graves’ notable courage, determination and outstanding leadership are worthy of emulation and reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the United States Army.
