The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Dellard C. Graves (ASN: RA-11199008), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 16 September 1951 in the vicinity of Suim-myon, Korea. On that date Sergeant Graves was with a unit which was in defensive positions being subjected to fierce assaults by a numerically superior enemy force. During this action, a platoon size enemy group attacked a friendly emplacement and in the ensuing fire fight several of Sergeant Graves’ comrades were wounded and lying helpless. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Sergeant Graves left his position and single-handedly counterattacked the hostile group. The enemy elements were taken by complete surprise and they immediately abandoned their mission. In this daring encounter Sergeant Graves inflicted numerous casualties upon the enemy. His willingness to risk his life to aid his comrades was an inspiration to all who observed him. The gallantry in action and outstanding devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Graves on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
