The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class John W. Grant (ASN: RA-6877286), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 2 September 1950 in the vicinity of Chang-yong, Korea. On that date Sergeant Grant was leading a heavy weapons section in support of several rifle squads engaged in a fierce fire fight with a numerically superior enemy force. During the ensuing action the vast numerical strength of the enemy forced the rifle squads to withdraw to better defensive positions, but Sergeant Grant voluntarily remained in position although annihilation by a fanatical enemy force seemed inevitable. He ordered his gun crew to remain in their foxholes and engaged the enemy with small arms fire and hand-to-hand combat, repulsing several enemy attacks. Having inflicted numerous casualties upon the enemy, Sergeant Grant withdrew his section to an area where other friendly units were preparing for a counterattack. He then assisted in leading a successful attack, dislodging the enemy forces from their newly won positions. The gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant Grant reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
