The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Warrant Officer, Junior Grade Gordon H. Grant (ASN: W-2141292), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 5 March 1951, near Keychon-ni, Korea. On that date he was Unit Administrator for an infantry company which was attacking a well dug-in enemy force on a hill near Keychon-ni. During the bitter fighting for the objective, several men were wounded, and because of the terrain features and increased enemy fire, prompt evacuation of the wounded seemed impossible. Immediately Warrant Officer Grant organized litter teams from nearby units and led them forward to the wounded, through intense enemy small arms, automatic weapons, and mortar fire. On three occasions he ordered the litter crews to take cover, while he personally crawled under enemy fire to evacuate the wounded to positions of comparative safety. Twice during this action he was forced to roll both the wounded and himself down the steep slope to escape hand grenade fragments. After he was certain that there were no more wounded men in the vicinity, he led his group to other areas where there were wounded. As the team advanced, it was subjected to enemy automatic weapons fire. Warrant Officer Grant stood fully exposed and fired his carbine at the enemy position. As a result of his courageous actions all of the wounded were evacuated to a safe position; immediate medical attention was given which saved many lives. The gallant conduct of Warrant Officer Grant on this occasion reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
