The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Charles Grant (ASN: US-51073221), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 13 October 1951 in the vicinity of Mundung-ni, Korea. On that date Company C had the mission of assaulting and securing strategic and heavily fortified enemy positions. During the attack the unit was halted by a heavy concentration of hostile small arms and automatic weapons fire. Private Grant, realizing the seriousness of the situation, voluntarily moved forward and stormed the hostile positions. He was successful in destroying the emplacements and killing all of the occupants with grenades and rifle fire. He then continued to inflict numerous casualties upon the enemy until he was mortally wounded by enemy fire. His courageous and self-sacrificing actions were an inspiration to his comrades and enabled them to secure their objective with a minimum of casualties. The gallantry in action and devotion to duty displayed by Private Grant on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
