The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Nicanor J. Granados (ASN: US-56062933), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Medical Company, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 24 November 1951, during Company E’s holding mission on Hill 355, near Kang So-Ri, Korea, the enemy attacked, with a forward outpost receiving the brunt of the assault. When the position’s medical aidman became a casualty, Private Granados, Second Platoon aidman, unhesitatingly left a relatively safe position and going forward among the men in the embattled area, immediately began administering first aid to the wounded. Weaponless, he moved fearlessly through the heavy fire, encouraging the defenders to hold their positions. After hours of exposure to the hostile fire, Private Granados sustained a painful head wound, but resolutely persevering, he continued his work until profuse bleeding forced him to seek medical attention. Refusing assistance, he walked from the area carrying his own equipment, thus freeing a man for use among the other wounded. The exemplary gallantry and completely selfless devotion to duty displayed by Private Granados reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
