The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Harold L. Graham (ASN: RA-16029658), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 31 August 1950 near Changyong, Korea. On the night of that date overwhelming enemy forces penetrated our defenses along the Naktong River and forced our troops to withdraw. The platoon commanded by Sergeant Graham was surrounded and was subjected to a series of fierce attacks. With complete disregard for his personal safety he constantly exposed himself to the intense hostile fire to direct the fire of his men, encouraging them and re-supplying them with ammunition. When he received orders to withdraw, he personally supervised the evacuation of all personnel and equipment to his company’s new position before attempting to leave himself. As he was withdrawing to the new position he was so severely wounded by enemy fire that he was unable to proceed furthers. As a result he spent twelve days behind enemy lines before he succeeded in reaching the safety of his own lines. The gallantry and unselfish leadership displayed by Sergeant Graham on this occasion reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
