The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Charles W. Graham (ASN: 0-368928), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 18 July 1952 in the vicinity of Chorwon, North Korea. On that date, Lieutenant Graham was serving as platoon leader in an Infantry unit that was assigned the mission of attacking and securing Hill 266, “Old Baldy”. He led his men in an outstanding manner in an attack toward a position where they had been ambushed the night before, directing their fire and employing them in positions where they might obtain the best line of fire. Due to intense enemy fire, the platoon was ordered to withdraw to reorganize. After the reorganization was completed, Lieutenant Graham then led them in a counterattack. With complete disregard for personal safety, he charged forward, directing his men and shouting words of encouragement to them. It was during that bitter conflict that Lieutenant Graham, while showing superior leadership in the face of intense hostile fire, was mortally wounded. The members of his platoon were so inspired by his selfless devotion and willingness to sacrifice his life for the lives of others, that they charged forward and secured their objective. The outstanding gallantry and consummate devotion to duty and comrades displayed by Lieutenant Graham reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
