The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Dudley C. Gould (ASN: 0-2017049), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 29 July 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On this date, during an assault upon enemy-held positions, Company L’s advance was halted by the intense enemy small arms and automatic weapons fire. Lieutenant Gould, with complete disregard for his own safety, deployed his men and, firing an abandoned enemy light machine gun from his hip, led his men in an assault upon enemy positions. Inspired by his display of courage and spirited leadership, the men of his platoon successfully overran and secured the objective, inflicting numerous casualties upon the enemy. The gallantry in action and outstanding leadership displayed by Lieutenant Gould on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
