The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal [then Private First Class] Eugene P. Gosline (ASN: 17027429), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery E, 60th Coast Artillery, in action on 16 April 1942. During a heavy artillery bombardment of Corregidor, an enemy shell exploded within Middleside Barracks. Corporal Gosline voluntarily left a place of shelter and without regard for personal safety assisted in treating the wounded who were in an exposed position. On his own initiative, he procured a vehicle and evacuated the more serious cases to the hospital at Malinta Tunnel. The distance covered was almost one and one-half miles and the entire route was under heavy shell fire. Corporal Gosline made the trip successfully and returned immediately through the continued bombardment to evacuate the remaining casualties.
