Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 456 (October 11, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Gerald F. Gority (ASN: RA-6946498), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 8 June 1951, near Oga-ri, Korea, two platoons of Company A were attacking well-fortified enemy positions on Hill 687 when intense hostile fire from several machine guns pinned down the assault platoon and mortally wounded the leader of the supporting platoon. The men of the supporting platoon, seeing their leader fall, became panicky and disorganized. Sergeant Gority, who had been bringing up the rear, realized the gravity of the situation and dashed to the front of the platoon amid the continuing lethal enemy fusillade, shouting words of encouragement and rallying the men. Inspired by his fearless actions, the men, reorganized once more, boldly charged the enemy positions. In the face of this renewed and vigorous assault the foe was compelled to flee from his positions. Sergeant Gority’s exemplary leadership and gallantry reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
