The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Gene Gore (ASN: US-53047595), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 22 September 1951 in the vicinity of Samtae-dong, Korea. On that date Corporal Gore, serving in the capacity of a radio operator, was with a unit which had the mission of securing a heavily fortified enemy-held strongpoint. From his position of comparative safety, he observed that the friendly element’s attack was temporarily halted as their leaders had become casualties. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Corporal Gore voluntarily advanced over the fire-swept area and assumed command of the assaulting force. Moving from man to man he shouted words of encouragement and urged them to resume the attack. His comrades, spurred on by his heroic example, drove the enemy forces from their positions and secured the objective. Corporal Gore’s initiative, aggressive leadership and devotion to duty won him admiration of the entire unit and aided immeasurably to the success of the mission. The gallantry in action displayed by Corporal Gore on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
