The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant [then Sergeant First Class] Michael Goosley (ASN: RA-33621419), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 3 September 1951 in the vicinity of Yanggu, Korea. On this date Company C’s attack upon vital enemy positions was halted by intense fire from commanding positions. Sergeant Goosley, realizing the necessity of eliminating the hostile bunkers and disregarding the intense enemy small arms, automatic weapons, artillery, and mortar fire, continued his assault. Upon nearing the hostile emplacements he completely destroyed them with grenades, thus dislodging the enemy and enabling friendly troops to advance. Returning to his unit, Sergeant Goosley learned that all the officers had been evacuated and he immediately assumed command. Setting up defensive positions to ward off the enemy counterattacks, he encouraged his men with a will to hold against overwhelming odds. Repeatedly exposing himself to great danger, Sergeant Goosley was directly responsible for repelling the fanatical hordes and maintaining the vital terrain. The gallantry in action and inspiring leadership displayed by Sergeant Goosley on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
