Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders 66 (October 16, 1950)
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Colonel (Field Artillery), [then Lieutenant Colonel] Walker Raitt Goodrich (ASN: 0-18815), United States Army, for gallantry and intrepidity in connection with military operations against the enemy in Korea, while serving as S-3, Division Artillery, 2d Infantry Division, on 1 September 1950 in the vicinity of Changnyong, Korea. During this period, the enemy’s continuing ground offensive threatened to break through American defensive positions along the Naktong River in the central sector of the Korean Front. At the height of the enemy offensive, Colonel Goodrich went to the front lines to obtain a better picture of the situation. While en route he discovered a large gap in the front lines which contained no friendly forces and through which enemy troops had begun to move. He observed that a short distance to the south of this gap there were friendly tanks and infantry troops. Although under constant enemy fire, he personally led these forces to the vicinity of the breach and directed their efforts in effectively closing the gap. His skillful employment of troops and his superior tactical knowledge of both tank and infantry units were of inestimable value in preventing the enemy from exploiting the break-through in the Naktong River salient. The gallantry and superior leadership displayed on this occasion by Colonel Goodrich reflect great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
