The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Private First Class] Louis R. Goodpasture (ASN: US-55981061), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, [then attached to Company L], 3d Battalion, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 18 September 1951 in the vicinity of Makumuk, Korea. On that date Sergeant Goodpasture was a flame thrower operator with Company L which was engaged in a fierce fire fight with a numerically superior enemy force. In the course of this action intense fire from an enemy automatic weapon’s position inflicted numerous casualties on the friendly elements. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Sergeant Goodpasture fearlessly advanced over the fire-swept area and successfully destroyed the enemy emplacement and annihilated its occupants. His courageous action enabled his unit to complete its assigned mission with a minimum of casualties. The gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant Goodpasture reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
