The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) James Buchanan Austin, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Cierges, France, 8 October 1918. Captain Austin continued for several hours to command his company, after he had been shot through the body and in the leg. He sent back numerous reports to his regimental commander during this period, but never mentioned the fact that he was severely wounded.
