The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Flavio R. Gonzales (Gonzalez) (ASN: 0-1915775), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery B, 39th Field Artillery Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. During the early morning hours of 3 April 1953, Company G, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, for whom Lieutenant Gonzales was Artillery forward observer, was defending its positions on outpost “Harry”, in the vicinity of Surang-ni, Korea. When the outpost was subjected to an intense assault by hostile forces, Lieutenant Gonzales and the other members of his team, became wounded. Disregarding his wounds, he immediately administered first aid to his men and then continued to call in accurate artillery fire, inflicting numerous casualties upon the charging foe. He refused to be evacuated until assured by the Battalion Commander that another forward observer team was en route to their location. As a result of his inspirational actions and the artily fire he directed, he was instrumental in repulsing the enemy assault. Lieutenant Gonzales’ outstanding gallantry, initiative and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
