The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Angell L. Gonzales (ASN: US-51066720), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 23 – 24 November 1951 near Kowang-San, Korea, as Company F occupied defensive positions, it was subjected to an intense enemy artillery and mortar barrage. After a direct hit on the bunker occupied by Corporal Gonzales, he dug himself, his light machine gun and ammunition out of the demolished emplacement and fearlessly exposed himself to the fierce hostile small arms fire to relocate his weapon in a more advantageous position. He remained in this open position, delivering such devastatingly accurate fire upon the enemy ground troops who had attacked, following the artillery barrage, until they withdrew. During a second attack, a fragment from an enemy hand grenade destroyed the booster cap assembly and flash hider of his weapon, but he continued to operate it manually with such effectiveness that the attacking forces were again forced to break contact. Sergeant Gonzales’ gallant action reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
