The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Charles H. Goldsmith (ASN: RA-14105483), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action on 22 August 1950, about 10 miles north of Taegu, Korea. During the morning of 22 August 1950, Sergeant First Class Goldsmith’s squad was engaged in a defensive action approximately ten miles north of Taegu. Although his position was under heavy enemy attack, Sergeant First Class Goldsmith moved from position to position coordinating and directing the fire of the riflemen of his squad. When an enemy round struck a pilot of 57-mm. recoilless ammunition, igniting some of the rounds, Sergeant First Class Goldsmith with complete disregard to his own personal safety, moved to the ammunition point, and threw out the burning rounds. He then threw sand and dirt on the burning rounds, extinguishing the blaze. During this time, Sergeant First Class Goldsmith was subjected to intense enemy rifle fire. He then resumed the direction of the fire of the men in his squad. Sergeant First Class Goldsmith’s gallant and spontaneous action undoubtedly prevented many casualties within his unit, and served as an inspiration to all who observed this action.
