The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Peter Travis Golden (ASN: 0-2208514), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery B, 503d Field Artillery Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 4 September 1950 near Songjin-Ni, Korea. On this date Lieutenant Golden was acting as Forward Observer for a Task Force with the mission of taking the town of Songjin-Ni. Our force was halted by seven enemy anti-tank guns and a large number of enemy infantry. Lieutenant Golden could obtain observation to direct fire only from the high ground in advance of the Task Force. With a total disregard for his own personal safety he moved the Observation Post to the high ground which was under constant and intense enemy small arms and mortar fire. He adjusted artillery fire from this highly exposed position for over an hour until all the enemy anti-tank guns had been eliminated and the enemy infantry completely dispersed. By his courage the Task Force was able to accomplish its mission and take the town of Songjin-Ni. The intrepid gallantry displayed by Lieutenant Golden is in keeping with the highest standards and traditions of the military service.
