The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class [then Sergeant] Paul W. Goggins, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, in action against the enemy on 14 February 1951 near Pabalmak, Korea. When the enemy launched a fierce counterattack along a ridge defended by the 1st Platoon and simultaneously unleashed a heavy mortar barrage, the assault carried them inside the perimeter and drove many of the defenders back in confusion. At the time of this action, Sergeant Goggins’ machine gun position was located on the left flank. Refusing to withdraw, he fired continuously and hurled hand grenades at the hard pressing enemy. He inflicted many casualties and prevented the foe from emplacing a machine gun on a point from where they could rake the company positions. During this engagement, which lasted throughout the night, Sergeant Goggins courageously bore the brunt of enemy fire and barrages of grenades and held his ground against the attack. Sergeant Goggins’ gallant action reflects great credit on himself and the military service.
