The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Robert E. Goerdt (ASN: US-55161483), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On the morning of 26 July 1952, the 1st Platoon of Company F was assigned the mission of assaulting the enemy outpost “Cavite” near Koyangdae, Korea, and capturing a prisoner for intelligence purposes. As the platoon moved toward the enemy positions it was subjected to a withering hail of enemy automatic weapons and small arms fire. Private Goerdt, observing an enemy machine gun squad making preparations to fire on the platoon, fearlessly dashed through the devastating hail of automatic weapons and small arms fire to within twenty yards of the enemy and fired into the hostile emplacement, killing or wounding the crew. He then aided the platoon by laying down a heavy volume of fire into the other enemy positions, inflicting heavy casualties on the foe while the platoon effectively and safely advanced to advantageous positions. When Private Goerdt tried to outflank another enemy machine gun he was wounded in the right arm, but disregarding the intense pain, he refused medical aid and continued toward the enemy position delivering such a deadly fire that the enemy was forced to seek cover. Private Goerdt’s outstanding gallantry and unwavering determination were instrumental to the success of the platoon’s mission and reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
