The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class John G. Gnall (ASN: US-52102782), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 11 October 1951 in the vicinity of Chong-ni, Korea. On that date Company B launched an assault on a strategic and well-fortified enemy-held hill. During its advance up the slope of its objective, the company encountered heavy fire from the well-entrenched hostile force. Private Gnall, fully realizing the seriousness of this obstacle and disregarding his personal safety, advanced toward the enemy bunker offering the most resistance. Armed only with his rifle and grenades, he made several attempts to neutralize the hostile bunker when he finally ran out of grenades. He then fixed his bayonet and braved the intense hostile fire as he stormed the emplacement. During this heroic and selfless action Private Gnall was fatally wounded by the enemy fire. His courageous deeds inspired his comrades to greater heights of daring and resulted in the successful completion of their mission. The gallantry in action and the self-sacrificing spirit displayed by Private Gnall reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
