The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Allen D. Gittleson (ASN: US-55264326), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Medical Company, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. During the early morning hours of 3 April 1953, elements of Company G, 2d Battalion, of which Private Gittleson was medical aidman, was assigned the mission of defending friendly positions on outpost “Harry”, in the vicinity of Surang-ni, Korea. When the objective was subjected to an intense assault by enemy forces, the friendly elements engaged in hand-to-hand combat with the enemy. Private Gittleson, exposing himself to hostile observation and fire, moved about the trenches administering aid to the wounded. Observing his platoon leader proceeding along the trench line toward the rear slope of the outpost, Private Gittleson accompanied him, to treat the casualties in the area. Upon encountering enemy forces, Private Gittleson assisted in driving them from the trenches by rapidly and effectively firing his weapon. Private Gittleson and his platoon leader then continued down the trench and found two wounded friendly soldiers whom they carried to the safety of a bunker where Private Gittleson rendered first aid to them. As a result of Private Gittleson’s action, the lives of many of his fellow soldiers were saved. Private Gittleson’s outstanding gallantry, initiative and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
