The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Richard D. Gillis (ASN: 0-450441), United States Army, for gallantry in action against an armed enemy on 26 September 1950 while serving with Headquarters, 2d Battalion, 32d Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. On the above date at 0530 hours Company F, 32nd Infantry, was located on South Mountain near Seoul, Korea, when an estimated 500 enemy infantrymen supported by artillery and mortars attacked, forcing F Company’s right flank to withdraw to the topographical crest of the hill. At 0630 hours Company F reported that the situation was critical; the enemy still had the initiative, and the company’s ammunition was almost exhausted. Under intense enemy automatic weapons and mortar fire, Major Gillis, the Battalion Executive Officer, quickly organized a carrying party and moved over exposed terrain to the battalion ammunition dump. He then led the party to within 50 yards of the enemy’s attacking elements and, while continually under fire, supervised the distribution of the ammunition. Major Gillis led the carrying party back to a secured position and then returned to Company F to assist in the reorganization of the company. With complete disregard for his own safety, Major Gillis moved about the company pointing out targets and directing fire on the enemy. The action of Major Gillis inspired the men and greatly expedited the successful attack the Company F. Major Gillis’ display of gallantry on this occasion reflects great credit on himself and the military service.
