The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Irving Louis Gill (ASN: US-55065219), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company H, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 27 August 1951 in the vicinity of Pia-ri, Korea. On this date Private Gill’s machine gun platoon was in support of a rifle company defending Hill 600. When the enemy launched its attack up the steep slippery slopes of the hill, using automatic weapons, small arms, and grenade fire, Private Gill was seriously wounded. With the large number of enemy troops advancing towards his position, endangering the security of the hill, Private Gill refused medical evacuation and remained firing his weapon. As a result of his heroic action, hostile forces were driven back suffering numerous casualties. When the hill was again secure, Private Gill was evacuated, but before arriving at the aid station he died of wounds. The gallantry in action and self-sacrificing devotion to duty displayed by Private Gill on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
