The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Russell G. Gilbert (ASN: RA-37009368), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 24 March 1951, near Uijongbu, Korea, Sergeant Gilbert’s unit was assigned the mission of seizing an enemy-held hill. As his platoon approached its intermediate objective, it was pinned down by an enemy automatic weapon at the base of the hill. Sergeant Gilbert, alone and exposed, maneuvered through the deadly fire, intermittently firing his weapon and tossing grenades, until he reached a position from which he personally assaulted and neutralized this enemy emplacement. Successful in wiping out this obstacle, the platoon continued its advance on the final objective. A squad was dispatched to a nearby hill to place fire on another automatic weapon position that was halting the attack of an adjacent company. This squad was pinned down and unable to attack as its only approach was approximately one hundred yards along an exposed ridge. Sergeant Gilbert observing that this adjacent company was receiving deadly fire from this weapon, grabbed several grenades and braved strong enemy fire to work his way along the exposed ridge. Nearing the position he quickly destroyed it with grenades and rifle fire, allowing the unit to advance with a minimum of losses. The gallantry and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Gilbert reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
