The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John N. Giellis (ASN: RA-17281374), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 18 May 1951 in the vicinity of Pungchon-ni, Korea. At about 0100 hours of that date, his company was counterattacking to seal off an enemy penetration of the defense line. Private Giellis, with complete disregard for his own safety, took a forward position during the assault and, completely ignoring the intense enemy small arms fire, personally led the attack. His inspiring example of courage was one of the main factors responsible for the rapid advance of his squad against the enemy and the success of the counterattack. The gallantry in action displayed by Private Giellis reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
