The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Charles J. Gieber (ASN: RA-17002526), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy on 2 December 1950 while serving with the 16th Reconnaissance Company, 1st Cavalry Division, in action near Yopa, Korea. During an attack on an enemy held village, Sergeant Gieber suddenly realized that a squad of relatively untrained Republic of Korea Troops were holding up the attack by hesitating in crossing a river. Realizing the need for courageous leadership and aggressive action, Sergeant Gieber voluntarily took command and personally led the attack by wading the river under heavy enemy small arms fire. Deploying his adopted squad, Sergeant Gieber led them forward until they were fired upon by an enemy machine gun at which time they again slowed down in the attack. With selfless behavior, Sergeant Gieber continued forward alone and single-handedly wiped out the enemy machine gun and five enemy soldiers. Inspired by their self-appointed leader’s courageous action, who continued to lead them even after painfully spraining his ankle, the squad continued the attack, wiping out a second machine gun nest and finally accomplished their mission. Sergeant Gieber’s gallantry and exemplary devotion to duty reflect great credit on himself and the military service.
