The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class George Gibson (ASN: RA-38128663), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action on 27 August 1950 at Po-Dong, Korea. On the evening of 27 August 1950, Private First Class Gibson volunteered to accompany a reconnaissance patrol with the mission of crossing the Naktong River into enemy territory and reconnoitering for enemy strength, weapons, and disposition. After crossing the river, Private First Class Gibson voluntarily took the position of advance scout of the patrol as a caution against ambush. The patrol was detected and fired upon by a numerically superior enemy force. Without hesitation Private First Class Gibson returned this fire and remained behind, despite intense enemy fire, covering the withdrawal of his comrades. He then returned to the river, gained the opposite shore and with disregard for personal safety exposed himself to assist his patrol leader from the river. With devotion for his comrades he plunged back into the river and rescued two other members of the patrol who were having difficulty in the middle of the stream. His prompt and decisive actions were responsible for saving the lives of the entire patrol. Private First Class Gibson’s undaunted courage and gallantry in risking his own life to save his comrades is a credit to himself and is in keeping with the highest standards and traditions of the military service.
