The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Arthur A. Gibbons (ASN: 17024881), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Bougainville, Solomon Islands, on 24 March 1944. When it was impossible to transmit an open-fire order to a strategically located machine gun, Private First Class Gibbons left the safety of his pillbox and dashed across 100 yards of fire-swept terrain to deliver the message. His action resulted in the placement of much-needed fire on enemy concentrations and contributed materially in repulsing the enemy. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Gibbons, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
