The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Jack M. George (ASN: 0-1338812), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 25 March 1951, near Uijongbu, Korea, while attacking Hill 361, Company I was pinned down by a heavy concentration of enemy fire and unable to advance. Lieutenant George’s platoon was assigned the mission of neutralizing the enemy strong points on the right flank of the company zone. Because the enemy was firmly entrenched our mortar and artillery fire caused few casualties and failed to dislodge him. Lieutenant George, although exposed to the heavy enemy fire, quickly made a personal reconnaissance and determined a route to the enemy’s well defended fortification. With complete disregard for his own safety, he fearlessly led his platoon up the hill into the withering hail of enemy fire, incessantly driving forward and utilizing his platoon’s firepower with maximum effectiveness. Placing himself in front of his platoon, he once more exposed himself to very accurate enemy fire, but his courageous actions so inspired his men that the entire platoon closed with the enemy, bayoneting six, inflicting nineteen casualties, and driving the remaining enemy from this position. The exceptional gallantry, leadership, and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant George reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
