The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Francis J. George (ASN: RA-21264641), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 30 May 1951 in the vicinity of Kosa-ri, Korea. On that date, the company, of which Sergeant George was a member, was ambushed and encircled by a large enemy force, firmly entrenched on dominating terrain features. During the withdrawing action, Sergeant George noticed that a forward artillery observer was wounded and lying in the midst of intense enemy small arms and automatic weapons fire. With complete disregard for his own safety, Sergeant George left his position and went to the aid of the wounded man and carried him through the intense enemy fire to the safety of a vehicle. The gallantry and outstanding devotion to duty and comrades displayed by Sergeant George on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
