The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Paul Gentry (ASN: 0-1917624), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 1 March 1952 in the vicinity of Yongho-dong, Korea. On that date, Lieutenant Gentry was acting as an air observer for mortar and artillery fire during an operation against heavily fortified enemy positions. Early in the attack two of a group of fifteen tanks penetrated enemy positions and became disabled by enemy mines. Attempts to retrieve the tanks and their crew were hampered by intense enemy fire. Fully realizing the danger to his own life, Lieutenant Gentry ignored the enemy antiaircraft weapons situated in the vicinity and flew low over the tanks to draw enemy fire away from them and the rescue parties. As a result of his intrepid and courageous action the enemy’s fire was drawn away from the disabled tanks, their crews and the parties attempting to retrieve them. The gallantry in action displayed by Lieutenant Gentry are in accordance with the highest traditions of the military service.
