The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Robert A. Gendreau (ASN: RA-21269110), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company D, 1st Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Chonggo-ri, Korea, on 31 December 1950. His battalion was defending against attacks by a numerically superior enemy forced estimated to be in at least regimental strength. These attacks were covered and supported by the most intense small arms, Machine gun, mortar and artillery fire. He was acting as assistant gunner on a machine gun that was situated on the Mail Line of Resistance filling in the first plane of a rifle company After some hours of fighting when the enemy pressure was most severe, several enemy mortar rounds landed nearby wounding the first gunner and knocking out the entire left flank protection of the gun. Realizing that unless immediate action was taken the enemy would be able to move through the area and get behind the entire battalion, he moved the weapon to a completely exposed position where he could obtain better fire coverage and attempted to cover the entire left sector with fire. So intense and accurate was his fire, that he stopped the enemy attack in that area, killing at least 30 of the enemy. Even after being seriously wounded by an enemy grenade, he continued his heavy fire until another man could reach him and take over the gun. Private First Class Gendreau’s courageous actions and devotion to duty aided most materially in the stand of his unit against overwhelming odds. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Gendreau, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Infantry.
