The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Samuel Edward Gee (ASN: 0-19251), United States Army, for gallantry while serving as Commanding Officer of the 164th Infantry Regiment, 23d Infantry Division (Americal), in action against the enemy during the attack on their entrenched positions on the high ground behind Cebu City, Philippine Islands. Lieutenant Colonel Gee was constantly at forward outposts directing the action. On 7 April 1945, in the operations which resulted in the capture of two strategic hills, he retained his forward position although subjected to heavy small arms and machine gun fire. His disregard for his own safety was an inspiration to all the infantry line units. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel Gee, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
