The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Wallace B. Gatrell (ASN: 0-78844/0-946697), United States Army, for heroic achievement while serving with Battery B, 37th Field Artillery Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, from 14 to 17 February 1951, in the vicinity of Chipyong-ni, Korea. During that period Lieutenant Gatrell’s battery was attached to an infantry regiment which had been surrounded by a large enemy force. During the entire engagement he exposed himself fearlessly to the withering enemy fire as he moved from one position to another, advising and encouraging his men as they supported the riflemen with point-blank artillery fire. His heroic actions resulted in saving many lives and were an inspiration to all his men. The heroism displayed by Lieutenant Gatrell reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
