The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Jack R. Gates (ASN: 0-53457), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 23 May 1951, the 2d Battalion was attacking three hills in the vicinity of Susong-myon, Korea, all of which were fiercely defended by a well-entrenched enemy force armed with many automatic weapons. Despite the incessant fire, Major Gates remained well forward at a selected observation post in order to obtain immediate visual knowledge of the terrain features and observe the progress and coordination of the attack. Disregarding spasmodic sniper fire directed at him, Major Gates described enemy emplacements and adjusted accurate neutralizing fire on these targets. As a result of his tactical skill and gallant leadership, the battalion successfully secured its final objectives. These exemplary qualities reflect the highest credit upon Major Gates and are in keeping with the esteemed traditions of the military service.
