The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Corporal] Adam R. Garza (ASN: RA-18356158), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 30 August 1951 in the vicinity of Yanggu, Korea. On this date during an attack upon enemy-held positions, friendly forces were halted by intense mortar fire from hostile emplacements. A member of a friendly Korean carrying party, carrying badly needed ammunition to the forward elements, was severely wounded by enemy shell fragments. Although the position was under direct hostile observation and fire, Sergeant Garza, with complete disregard for his personal safety, left the cover of his foxhole and crossed the fire-swept area to assist the wounded soldier. At this time an enemy mortar round burst so close to him that the concussion knocked him to the ground. Undaunted, Sergeant Garza continued on his mission and succeeded in evacuating the wounded man to safety. He then assisted the carrying party in completing its mission. The gallantry in action and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Garza on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
