The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John Gary (ASN: RA-44002237), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 2d Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. In the vicinity of Ipsok, Korea, on 27 November 1950, Private First Class Gary’s company was defending a ridgeline against strong hostile attack. When infiltrating enemy attempted to circumvent the flank, he ran through a heavy concentration of mortar and artillery fire to obtain a re-supply of hand grenades. Returning through the deadly barrage with a case of grenades on his back, he exposed himself to intense small arms and automatic weapons fire as he distributed the grenades throughout the position and then joined his comrades in driving the enemy to flight. Private First Class Gary’s valorous actions are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
