The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) George W. Gardner (ASN: 0-1313392), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action on 27 August 1950 at Hyong-Pung, Korea. On 27 August 1950, Lieutenant Gardner was in command of a reconnaissance patrol consisting of 30 men, with the mission of advancing on Hill 409, the enemy stronghold in the Naktong River Salient. Its purpose was that of gaining information on disposition, strength and armament of the enemy. As the patrol closed with the enemy they were enveloped on both flanks by a numerically superior force which had advantage of prepared positions and superior fire power. Undeterred by withering enemy fire, and although wounded, Lieutenant Gardner calmly and with complete disregard for his personal safety, organized and directed his men in the building of a firing line. His prompt and aggressive action enabled the patrol to break the enemy trap and allowed their withdrawal to the point of departure with minor casualties, a feat which in the face of the enemy’s heavy automatic weapons fire would have been impossible except for his cool courage and gallant leadership. Lieutenant Gardner’s heroic actions on this occasion reflect great honor upon himself and his organization, and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
