The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class George Garcia (ASN: RA-14087078), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 27 July 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On this date, while spearheading an attack on enemy positions, Company A was halted by intense hostile grenade, mortar and small arms fire. Sergeant Garcia, who had assumed the duties of his platoon leader, openly exposed himself to the enemy fire while directing his men in the attack. Through his courage and leadership, his men were able to advance to within striking distance of their objective, destroying many enemy positions and inflicting numerous hostile casualties. During the attack, Sergeant Garcia was seriously wounded but refused to be evacuated and remained in his position in order to direct the artillery fire on enemy positions. When his unit was ordered to withdraw, he reorganized his men and directed their withdrawal to defensive positions. The gallantry in action and outstanding leadership displayed by Sergeant Garcia on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
