The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Cipriano C. Garcia (ASN: RA-39843713), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 79th Medium Tank Battalion, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. At about 0300 hours on 1 September 1950 near Haman, Korea, the enemy attacked in a pass where Sergeant First Class Garcia had placed his tank. Even as flank positions were overrun, he kept his tank in place, delivering withering fire on the hostile hordes. While he fired the .50 caliber machine gun on the rear deck, an enemy anti-tank shell set fire to the tank. Even after he was seriously wounded by a grenade, he continued to cover withdrawal of his crew and to inflict heavy casualties on the enemy, until weak from loss of blood, he had to be evacuated. Sergeant First Class Garcia’s gallant devotion to duty and exemplary soldierly ability are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
